ALWAYS SHINE Trailer

A rocky friendship, professional jealousy, and two vaguely similar leads are established in the trailer for Always Shine, leading viewers down a recognizable path. The movie centers on two actresses who go on a weekend trip to reconnect, but they probably should’ve avoided the cabin in the woods and their underlying resentments if they wanted to avoid psychological disaster.

The film premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, landing a Best Actress award for rising star Mackenzie Davis. She’s done steady work on the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire and made a notable appearance in the most recent season of Black Mirror, but the next couple years could see her break out. Upcoming projects include the latest from Juno’s Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody as well as Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Blade Runner 2049.

Her costar is another TV and movie alum, Master of Sex’s Caitlin FitzGerald. In fact, director Sophia Takal is a more consistent actress than she is a director, and it’s this experience that may set the film apart. Too often the stories of women breaking down are helmed by men, and while these include some great ones that Always Shine seems reminiscent of (Persona, Black Swan), the three women’s hands-on experience with the pressures that drive these characters could steer the film in a slightly different direction.

Always Shine is directed by Sophia Takal and stars Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin FitzGerald. It will be released in the U.S. on November 25th, 2016. For screening dates and locations, click here.
