THE FLORIDA PROJECT Trailer

The grit of poverty and the magic of childhood combine in The Florida Project, the latest from Tangerine director Sean Baker.

Like in his previous film, Baker turns his camera towards overlooked members of society, but this time his protagonists are much smaller in stature. The kids living at a pastel-colored motel aren’t aware of the economic distance between themselves and the well-to-do vacationers, which makes their home seem more like a playground than a trap.

Even in this trailer, you can see their joy contrasted against Willem Dafoe’s weary face. Still, Dafoe’s character doesn’t begrudge them their energy, as they are one of the few elements that make the Magic Castle Motel’s name unironic.

A critical hit at the Directors Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival, The Florida Project seems primed to move Baker further towards mainstream recognition. The film’s aesthetic leans too heavily on realism to be a commercial hit, but if critics and film lovers continue to shout his praises, then Baker’s career will only continue to grow.

For now, The Florida Project will likely remain small, but all indications are that this is a gem worth seeking out.

The Florida Project is directed by Sean Baker and stars Willem DafoeBrooklynn Prince, and Valeria Cotto. It will be released in the U.S. on October 6th, 2017 and in the U.K. on January 12th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
