I Love You, Daddy is an upcoming comedy by Louis C.K. I Love You, Daddy is the first film C.K. has directed since his 2001 film Pootie Tang which was a massive bomb. In the years since Pootie Tang, Louis C.K. honed his craft as a director by directing, writing and starring in his own TV shows Louie and Horace and Pete.

I Love You, Daddy stars Louis C.K. as Glen Topher, a successful TV writer producer who is obsessed with renowned filmmaker Leslie Goodwin (John Malkovich). His teenaged daughter China (Chloë Grace Moretz) has recently moved in with him after living with her mother (Helen Hunt) for the past few years. While at a party China introduces herself to Leslie which leads to a relationship. Although Glen is a fan, his cinematic hero dating his underage daughter is a bridge too far. While his daughter’s relationship with Goodwin continues, Glen also has to deal with issues at work such as finding the right actors for his new project.

It’s no secret Louis C.K. is a big Woody Allen fan, his TV show Louie was very heavily influenced by Woody Allen films, this trailer looks a lot like Manhattan and he had a small role in Blue Jasmine. The trailer makes it seems like Goodwin is emblematic of Allen as well as other older men in Hollywood with wives half their age. The sad thing about I Love You, Daddy is that it takes one of the worst elements in Woody Allen films, May-December relationships, as its main subject. One of the reasons why this disturbs people is the fact that Allen has been accused of sexual abuse, something he has in common with C.K. who has been accused of conduct similar to Harvey Weinstein‘s by multiple women. While C.K. is certainly talented enough to make fun of any subject, we’ll have to wait and see whether he’s done so with this film or whether he’s gone full Allen on us.

I Love You, Daddy is directed by Louis C.K. and stars Louis C.K., Chloë Grace Moretz, Pamela Adlon, Rose Byrne, Charlie Day, Edie Falco, Helen Hunt and John Malkovich. It will be released in the U.S. on November 17th, 2017. For international release dates click here.
