IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD Trailer

Don’t let the inauspicious title fool you; In This Corner of the World has been anything but meek. A box office hit in Japan and a winner at their Academy Awards, its subsequent run on the festival circuit was met with further acclaim.

The film’s title is more a reflection of its story than its potential appeal. While focusing on the specifics of daily life for a young woman in World War II era Japan, it seems poised to win over animation fans worldwide.

Writer/director Sunao Katabuchi found success before with Princess Arete, which took its time telling a fairy tale story. At over two hours long, In This Corner of the World will likely replicate that pace, but there’s plenty to cover in this time period. The war ended up on Japan’s soil, and even whimsical, artistic housewives like this film’s main character were deeply affected.

The film is based on a manga series of the same name, so it will benefit from a built-in fan base. The trailer, though, offers up plenty of drama and eye-catching artistic choices to lure in uninitiated audiences. Expect to hear widespread praise of this film as it expands internationally.

In This Corner of the World is directed by Sunao Katabuchi and stars Non. It will be released in the U.K. on June 28th, 2017 and in the U.S. on August 11th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
