JUSTICE LEAGUE Trailer

The accelerated pace of the DC Extended Universe means we’re getting to the premier teams much faster than in the MCU, but even that buzz-worthy press hasn’t been able to stem the slow loss of goodwill towards the franchise. The series kickoff, Man of Steel, garnered mixed reactions while critical reception for Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad plummeted. Box office returns have underwhelmed as well, and the general feel, even among ardent fans, has turned into trepidation. It seems that we’ve all been let down by this young series, leading me to wonder what we’re supposed to do with this Justice League trailer.

I know it’s meant to be an exciting tease for the superhero team, so why does it play into so many of the criticismsit’s already leveled against the series? Why is there no indication that it will be anything but a grim, murky, poorly edited rehash of what other superhero series have already done? Is the marketing department really this tone deaf about what the series needs right now or was it just too late to save this particular film?

Justice League is, after all, securely under the thumb of director Zach Snyder, who has taken much of the blame for leading the series to its current state. Most of the failings I listed can be found in his non-DCEU films, so it’s fair to assume they come from him and not the studio. This Justice League trailer does look like an accurate representation of a Snyder film; I’m just not sure if that’s what the majority wants anymore.

So, do we hang on to the few quips that land in this trailer and hope Wonder Woman turns the tide for the series or do we point out that this tease begins like a Logan ripoff with its old man Bruce on a horse sequence and give in to the simmering rancor? I prefer to give films the benefit of the doubt, but this trailer isn’t helping me get on DC’s side.

Justice League is directed by Zach Snyder and stars Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on November 17th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
