NERUDA Trailer

The double dose of Pablo Larraín continues with Neruda, the other not-a-biopic from the director of Jackie. With both films getting red hot praise from critics, you’ll likely hear about Larraín throughout awards season, bringing a long overdue increase in name recognition to the Chilean director.

With a bevy of inventive, politically-minded films under his belt, the fact that Neruda splits time between an invented police officer and the titular literary giant and politician won’t surprise Larraín’s admirers, but the uninitiated might be taken aback. Pablo Neruda, after all, lived a very full life, and a traditional biopic would have more than enough material to draw from. Instead, Larraín’s film covers only the time Neruda spent on the run from government officials, attempting to capture the affect the man’s work had on others as much as the man himself.

Gael García Bernal and Luis Gnecco reunite with Larraín to bring the cat and mouse players to life, each supported by the rich environments that the director creates. Cinematographer Sergio Armstrong is another Larraín staple, and it’s clear from the trailer how carefully light and color was used by both men in every shot.

Neruda looks to be a detailed, evocative look at the Nobel laureate’s influence, and will likely delight those who are tired of the traditional biopic formula.

Neruda is directed by Pablo Larraín and stars Gael García Bernal, Luis Gnecco, and Mercedes Morán. It will be released in the U.S. on December 16th, 2016 and in the U.K. on January 6th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
