Whether its a streaming network, printed journalism, television or radio transmissions the media is massive, and inescapable, so why not make movies about this oppressive facet of life? These films vary in years, themes, genre’s and that’s why they are so important.
Nightcrawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, balances the crime thriller, dark comedy, and character study genres with ease. The film focuses on Louis Bloom, a mysterious young insomniac who takes to the nighttime streets of Los Angeles in an attempt to capture the most shocking breaking news. Armed with his video camera and sidekick, Rick, Louis turns real life car crashes and murders into exciting film clips to headline the morning stories.
It’s really amazing how some actors are willing to forgo a career full of surefire cash grabs and blockbusters for smaller, bolder roles. Actors like Ryan Gosling and Jake Gyllenhaal have done this and created some very interesting (though not always great) movies that stretch their abilities and require more thought than the many interchangeable popcorn flicks.
