The Post is about the true story behind one of the most important news stories during the Vietnam War. The Post covers the events leading up to the publication of the Pentagon Papers. The Pentagon Papers were significant because they exposed the U.S. government’s lies to the American public concerning its involvement in the Vietnam War over the course of 30 years. The Post focuses on editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), perhaps best known for his role in breaking the Watergate scandal a few years after the Papers were published, and Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep), who owned the Washington Post at the time.

Once the Nixon administration realized top secret government files concerning U.S. involvement in Vietnam had been stolen, they did everything they could to intimidate journalists trying to expose them. They sued the Washington Post and the New York Times, threatening to shut both newspapers down if they publised any of the confidential information. Once the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the administation the floodgates were opened and all the administration’s skeletons started tumbling out of the closet.

The Post has been one of the big awards season contenders since it was first announced. It will be interesting to see whether it will become the second film about journalism in three years to walk away with the Best Picture statuette, just like Spotlight two years ago. Considering the subject matter, it will be interesting to see how The Post stacks up against All the President’s Men which also featured Ben Bradlee (played by Jason Robards).

Reflecting on that film it seems strange Kay Graham wasn’t featured in it at all. That being said, it will be interesting to see whether this film will meet people’s expectations, Streep certainly looks set to collect yet another nomination if not her fourth Oscar for her portrayal of a fierce woman who defied the President.

The Post is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Bradley Whitford and Zach Woods. It will be released in the U.K. on January 19th, 2018 and in the U.S. on December 22nd, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
