THE RED TURTLE Trailer

When Studio Ghibli announced its future would be focused on making short films, fans the world over were deeply saddened. One of the upsides of this decision has been that the studio will now be co-producing foreign films, with The Red Turtle being the first foreign film they have co-produced in their 30-year history.

The Red Turtle is the first feature film by Dutch Oscar-winning animator Michael Dudok de Wit. The film has already won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and has been tipped for an Oscar win in early 2017.

The trailer doesn’t give away much of the plot apart from the fact that the film seems to be about a man who ends up stranded on an uninhabited island somewhere. When he tries to escape he encounters the titular red turtle. After that, he ends up back on the island and when he wakes up he sees a mysterious woman arise from the ocean…

The island, as well as the rest of the trailer, look gorgeous. Studio Ghibli has always allowed its directors to make their own films, which is why it’s not surprising that the trailer looks like most of Dudok de Wit‘s animated short films, such as Father and Daughter which won him his Oscar.

The Red Turle is directed by Michael Dudok de Wit and is currently playing at festivals around the world before entering wide release in the U.S. on January 20th, 2017. The film has already been released in some countries, click here to see if your country is one of them.
