WONDERSTRUCK Trailer

Todd Haynes does like his period pieces, and he got to make two in Wonderstruck, as the split narrative takes place in both the ’70s and the ’20s.

The two children at the story’s center are separated by time but connected in more ways than one, and the reliance on child actors is always a perilous leap. Luckily, Haynes got the wonderful Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon) for one of the roles, and the Cannes crowd sung the praises of newcomer Millicent Simmonds.

Haynes will be the attraction for most audience members, though, as his films are often sumptuous and offer up an interesting take on their source material. He found quite the story to sink his teeth into with Wonderstruck since the book of the same name takes its own experimental approach. It is told partially through words and partially through illustrations, a method author Brian Selznick had experimented with in The Invention of Hugo Cabret (which was adapted into the film Hugo).

Reports are that Haynes tried to capture those disparate storytelling methods in this film. You can see from the trailer that the ’20s section is in black and white, and in a nod to the character’s deafness and love of silent cinema, is also without dialogue. Yeah, Haynes isn’t making Wonderstruck straightforward just because it stars kids, so get ready for another distinctive addition to his filmography.

Wonderstruck is directed by Todd Haynes and stars Oakes FegleyMillicent SimmondsJulianne Moore, and Michelle Williams. It will be released in the U.S. on October 20th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
