INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Trailer

If Jeff Goldblum’s character is to be believed, then we aren’t the ones making the resurgence. The aliens have outpaced us in the twenty years after their July 1996 attack, and it looks like that equates to bigger spaceships!

Let’s face it, nobody’s going to a Roland Emmerich movie for Shakespeare-esque drama (unless you went to that movie he made about Shakespeare). We want crumbling buildings and cheesy dialogue, and considering how similar this trailer feels to the original Independence Day, I’d say that Emmerich is going to deliver the explosion-fest we expect from him.

The original Independence Day was such a massive hit that it’s pretty shocking how long it took for a sequel to be made. Allegedly Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin had worked on a script years ago but couldn’t find an approach that they were satisfied with. Hopefully that means they’re shooting for a plot that isn’t a complete mess, but on that front I’m mostly curious how Charlotte Gainsbourg is going to fit in. If they pull a Juliette Binoche in Godzilla, I’ll be kind of pissed.

If nothing else, Resurgence will be a notable entry for anyone wanting to examine how special effects have changed over the last twenty years. The original Independence Day was made in the dying days of practical effects, which is why it still holds the record for the most miniature models used in a single film. Resurgence will undoubtedly have abandoned this filming strategy in favor of pure CGI, giving everyone the opportunity to see how the same director captures real-life versus generated explosions. I smell a think piece for the tech nerds.

Independence Day: Resurgence is directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jeff Goldblum, and Jessie Usher. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on June 24th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
