THE SPACE BETWEEN US Trailer

The Space Between Us is the classic boy meets girl story, except the boy and girl are on different planets and the boy doesn’t know who his father is. It’s science fiction, romance, mystery, and medical drama all rolled up into one hopefully neat package. Admit it, if the film can pull off all these threads, it’ll be a pretty great movie.

Asa Butterfield takes on the lead role with the science fiction cred of Ender’s Game backing him up, but if anyone seems tailor-made for their part, it’s Britt Robertson. 2015 should’ve been her breakout year with Tomorrowland and The Longest Ride, but both failed to live up to expectations.

The important thing to note is that neither failure should be marked up to Robertson, who gave a good and very different performance in each. A meld of the cheesy romance from The Longest Ride and the plucky heroine of Tomorrowland would be pretty similar to what she’s being asked to do in The Space Between Us, so expect her to nail the part.

Backing them up is the solid supporting cast of Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, and BD Wong (will he ever not play a scientist or doctor?). Peter Chelsom of the dramedy Hector and the Search for Happiness is tasked with wrangling all this together, so at least the producers recognized the need for someone with experience at balancing tone.

This project doesn’t have room to stumble if it’s going to contend with the big end of year releases. In the U.S. it will open against the Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence led Passengers, family film Sing, and video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed. To combat this clog of movies, it’s scheduled for a mid-week release. Two things could come of this: bad word of mouth could destroy its opening weekend or good word of mouth could lead to it surprising the big boys. I’m hoping that the latter scenario plays out.

The Space Between Us is directed by Peter Chelsom and stars Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, and Gary Oldman. It will be released in the U.S. on December 21st, 2016 and in the U.K. on February 10th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
