THE LOST CITY OF Z Trailer

Man is going into the wilderness again. We never stop, really. We shift our definition of ‘wilderness’ from jungles to mountains to distant planets, but we always push forward, never content with our discoveries. The drive to pursue what is just out of reach, be it dreams, obsessions, or knowledge, is a universal experience, but one that most of us temper.

Then there’s people like Colonel Percy Fawcett, who in 1925 risked everything to find an advanced city deep in the Amazon. Whether explorers like him perish or survive, their stories tend to outlive them. They went further than most of us dare to, and through them we can comment on our own, lesser risks.

Wide-reaching thematic extrapolations like these give filmmakers an excuse to stage big, lavish productions, something writer/director James Gray has experience with. His last film, The Immigrant, was rich in period detail and stars, with Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and MCU vet Jeremy Renner all featured.

In The Lost City of Z, he’s got a jungle and current Spider-Man Tom Holland to attract an audience, while co-stars Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller, and Robert Pattinson (did you recognize him under the beard?) will bring their own fans.

The Lost City of Z will need to live up to the legendary history of explorers on film, many of whom ventured into the same area as Fawcett. Gray knew just how challenging the project was going to be and wrote to Francis Ford Coppola for advice. Coppola’s response: “Don’t go.” Gray went anyway.

The Lost City of Z is directed by James Gray and stars Charlie Hunnam, Tom Holland, and Sienna Miller. It will be released in the U.S. on April 21st, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
