THOR: RAGNAROK Trailer

Thor: Ragnarok wants you to know that Thor is funny. It may not be most appropriate time to emphasize this given that Cate Blanchett’s Hela is out to destroy Asgard, but hey, with a new haircut comes a new attitude, and Thor does some major trimming in this movie.

Those golden locks aren’t the only thing falling away in Thor’s third outing, as Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster doesn’t appear and a new director takes the reigns. Taika Waititi may be behind the tone shift more than anyone, as the primarily comedic director of indies like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows makes his first foray into blockbusters with Ragnarok.

The MCU has always been fairly lighthearted and quip-filled, but until Guardians of the Galaxy, none of them could be classified as comedies. With so many movies under their belt, though, even the lean, mean marketing machine that is the MCU has loosened a smidge, and many hope that Waititi will be the first director to put a unique stamp on the universe.

The trailer for Ragnarok seems to be playing into these hopes, showing off Chris Hemsworth’s previously underutilized comedic chops and putting Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum at opposing ends of the color spectrum. All this and a retro song makes Ragnarok look much more like Guardians than Civil War, and given the former came closest to breaking the universe’s mold, this trailer plays as a welcome tease for those weary of the MCU formula without alienating die hard fans.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, and Tessa Thompson. It will be released in the U.K. on October 27th, 2017 and in the U.S on November 3rd, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
