WARCRAFT Trailer

You know the story: movies based on games are rarely, if ever, good. Yet, my stupid monkey brain refuses to listen to sense. Woohoo! Warcraft! It even has characters from the actual game involved. That’s when I realize I have once again fell unto the “nostalgia trap.” In my search to actually feel the same sense of wonder and bewilderment I had as a child, I stumble unto highway robbers. We know them as studio executives pandering to my misguided sense of loyalty. All of this to pinch my measly pouch of coin. My question to Hollywood then becomes “May I get some change back?” “No?” “Fine, take all of it!”

This action and adventure fantasy film is directed by Duncan Jones. It stars Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster and Paula Patton. Going back to its roots, Warcraft intends to relate the origin story which made me love it so much. In keeping with the initial encounters between the Human Alliance and Orcish Horde, this story focuses on the perspectives of both races. It features characters such as Durotan and Lothar, taking place in several locations established in the game world. Yay, back to Azeroth!

Time to nitpick! Nothing seems to go together. Look at the trailer and tell me the actors mesh well with the cinematic environment that is established. They don’t. Nothing in the trailer looks like the reality we’re in. The environments are all computer generated graphics which look awesome until you notice the poor actors having to work with what I assume is green screen. Sometimes, you can’t suspend your disbelief and this is one of those times. Look at Garona. Most of the orcs are double the body size of each human. Why doesn’t she look like Ronda Rousey in she-hulk makeup?

Now that that is out of the way, look at all the cool battles! It all looks beautiful. Not natural, but beautiful nonetheless. There are vistas of open and unobstructed sky except the random griffon or two. The battles look like wars between huge green and brown giants suffering from excessive under-bites. Oh and the part where the knight jumps off the cliff onto the griffon is pretty nice. It’s very similar to Tolkien inspirations which you know already if you’re a Warcraft fan. Now, the only thing left to mention is why orc babies are so small. You’d think they be like Shrek babies.

Warcraft comes out June 10th 2016 in the U.S. and June 3rd 2016 in the U.K. For the other dates, click here.
