WOLVES Trailer

Athletic success doesn’t cure all problems in the trailer for Wolves, the upcoming sports and coming-of-age drama from writer/director Bart Freundlich. In the film, a high school senior played by Taylor John Smith struggles to land a basketball scholarship only to have the pressure increase when his father (Michael Shannon) gambles away his parent’s savings.

It’s no secret that college recruitment is a brutal business, and there’s been plenty of dramas that show the enormous weight placed on young athletes. Smith himself had a role just last year on the second season of American Crime, which touched on the privileges and temptations of elite basketball players. As long as the glorification of these athletes continues we’ll keep getting these dramas, and the culture doesn’t show any signs of letting up.

Shannon is undoubtedly the biggest name here, and while the prospect of him as a gambling addict will draw a certain amount of viewers, Wolves will need more than just his name to distinguish itself from the pack. Carla Gugino has been in big projects of late, but they’ve all been of lesser quality (Batman v Superman, San Andreas). The chance to square off with Shannon as his financially supportive wife is a meaty role, and if she steps up to the challenge, the film could find its unique selling point in their complicated family dynamic.

Wolves is directed by Bart Freudlich and stars Taylor John Smith, Michael Shannon, and Carla Gugino. It will be released in the U.S. on March 3rd, 2017. Further release dates are not currently known.
