A QUIET PASSION Trailer

Poetic filmmaker Terence Davies takes on a poet in A Quiet Passion, a biopic of Emily Dickinson covering her teenage years onward.

The time span means that Dickinson will be played by two actress, with the younger years taken on by Emma Bell and the older by Cynthia Nixon. Nixon is getting top billing with the meatier adult role, diving into most of Dickinson’s famous writing and her eccentric years as a recluse. Yeah, Dickinson led an odd life, so the film isn’t likely to follow rote biopic beats.

Davies also isn’t a filmmaker that bends stylistically, and few of his films can be described as quiet. They brim with emotion and, well, passion, so it will be interesting to see him apply this technique to an extremely interior character.

Dickinson’s life makes her a bit of an enigma, toiling away as she did for decades on poems that were largely unpublished during her lifetime. Of course, she eventually gained notoriety and posthumous fame, but that doesn’t explain what kept her going through years of obscurity. It’s an interesting but not effortlessly cinematic question, but Davies doesn’t make effortless films. That may just make him the perfect person to bring her to life.

A Quiet Passion is directed by Terence Davies and stars Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle, and Keith Carradine. It will be released in the U.K. on April 7th, 2017 and in the U.S. on April 14th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
