COLLATERAL BEAUTY Trailer

Warner Brothers has put itself in a tough spot with its heartwarming drama Collateral Beauty, trying to position it as the safe, star-studded movie the entire family can see over the holidays. The problem is that December has become a busy movie going time, and that card has become a popular one to play.

In the U.S. it will see direct competition from La La Land, Rogue One, Passengers, and Sing. Banking on the star power of Will Smith won’t be enough, even if he does have backups like Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, and an emotional Keira Knightley.

The two trailers that’ve been released haven’t given the film a distinct flavor, as the setup that Time, Love, and Death are visiting a grieving father come off more as a gimmick than as a device for honest pathos. This could be due to the shuffling that occurred during the film’s pre-production, which saw director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon exit the project over creative differences with the studio.

And yet, the often surprising David Frankel has taken over, who’s similarly straightforward films The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me, and Hope Springs have found solid audiences. He’s one of the most consistent at pulling off agreeable films, which seems to be where Collateral Beauty is trying to land.

Also, I’m still waiting for Michael Peña to get a wide release of his own.

Collateral Beauty is directed by David Frankel and stars Will Smith, Kate Winslet, and Kiera Knightley. It will be released in the U.S. on December 16th, 2016 and in the U.K. on December 26th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
