DHEEPAN Trailer
Over one million people crossed into Europe in 2015, more than three times the amount from the previous year, overwhelming existing systems and leaving the EU struggling to agree on a unified approach to the crisis. Some countries have tightened their border control, citing old, xenophobic fears that ignore the flesh-and-blood people sitting on their doorsteps. It’s a perfect time, then, for films like Dheepan, which tell small, humanistic stories of immigrants that make us remember the individuals at the heart of this crisis.
Director Jacques Audiard has made films about forgotten people before, most notably his 2009 prison film A Prophet, which took home the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Dheepan one-ups that result by landing 2015’s Palme d’Or and winning a myriad of awards from other groups that pretty much cover all aspects of the filmmaking process.
This is, shall we say, a very decorated film, and if that, Audiard’s track record, and the film’s topical nature aren’t enough to pique your interest, then the trailer should tip you off that Dheepan’s not a film to be missed. It looks gorgeous, and it’s clear that there’s threats brimming from all sides for our main characters. This looks like a film with enough narrative weight to back up its flair, hitting a sweet spot that should please the vast majority of serious filmgoers.
Dheepan is directed by Jacques Audiard and stars Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan, and Claudine Vinasithamby. It will be released in the U.K. on April 8th, 2016 and in the U.S. on May 13th, 2016. International release dates can be found here.
