MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS Trailer

A great rivalry is brought to life in Mary Queen of Scots, one that promises elaborate costumes, harsh words, and more than a bit of blood.

There’s a history lesson that must be covered before Mary enters the picture, which draws upon the turbulent aftermath of Henry VIII’s rule of England. His break with the Catholic church and unclear line of succession left many with claims to the throne and the supporters to help them take it. Queen Elizabeth I eventually ascended, but even then the crown was not securely hers.

Another prominent claimant hanging around was Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland since infancy and briefly queen consort in France. In other words, she was a seasoned ruler, deeply entrenched in European royalty, a gravely serious threat, and a relation of Elizabeth. Those royal families had a way of stirring up drama, which is precisely why we keep returning to their stories.

The showdown pits two of our finest actress against each other, with Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I and Saoirse Ronan as Mary Stuart. They’ll befriend and bicker with each other until the inevitable resolution comes (I’m guessing the film won’t rewrite the history books), and if those two going at it isn’t enough to get you excited, then I question whether you have a pulse.

Helming the project is Josie Rourke, who makes her film debut after years working in the theater. She’ll have to be careful not to stage things like a play, but whether or not she opens up the film around the incredible cast, this story should be big enough to see it through.

Mary Queen of Scots is directed by Josie Rourke and stars Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. It will be released in the US on December 7th, 2018 and in the UK on January 18th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
