Watch Movies Together: Movie On Me

Today, I’m presenting a pretty awesome mobile app, and it’s called Movie On Me.

Social media has made the world a lot smaller – I have online friends in India, the U.S., in Chile, everywhere! I’d love to hang out with them and watch movies with them, together. Yet, it’s undeniable that the physical distance still makes this impossible (I’m impatiently awaiting the invention of teleportation. Not kidding). It can be rather frustrating that I know all these great people all around the world, and, having recently moved to the other side of the world, I don’t know many people here. I wish I knew some people that I could watch movies with, without having to fly 20 hours first.

movieonmeI know there are many others that watch movies alone. Or watch it with a partner who isn’t as much into movies (and tends to fall asleep a few times too often – for shame – and/or doesn’t enjoy discussing the movie afterwards). Or none of your friends enjoy Game of Thrones as much as you do , and you’d love to philosophize about the show with real people for once, instead of always having to read others’ thoughts in comment sections. Sometimes it’d be a lot more fun to watch movies with other film buffs, but it can be pretty challenging to find them, especially some with the same film interests as you.

Movie On Me is an initiative by Brandon Overton, a film enthusiast and SXSW volunteer (with an interest in Australian movies – I’d love to watch them with him!). It’s a mobile application that allows you to create film or TV events in your city. There are already lots of tools and apps that allow you to schedule events and meetups – I’ve been checking out meetup.com to find other film fans, for instance, but they mostly watch films I’m not really into.

What’s great about Movie On Me is that it allows you to find and create events that are only for watching movies or shows together. When you open the app, you’ll see a map of your city with upcoming events. There is a range of filters available, you can select a genre you’d like to watch with others, or you could select more specific filter options like “no kids” (or “kids encouraged”), or “snacks provided” or “quote along”, or “archive”, for those who enjoy watching the oldies. They’ve thought of pretty much anything to make watching film with others easier. Watch a movie or TV show, enjoy some drinks and snacks, discuss the film or show afterwards – this is all great just on its own, but it’s also a great way to meet like-minded people!

Furthermore, another plus of this app is that it allows independent filmmakers to add trailers and info of their films to this app, enabling them to bring their work to the audience – they could even host their own screening events!

But now comes the down point. The app doesn’t actually exist yet. 🙁 Brandon is working hard on realizing this app, and he’s working together with a great studio, RockSauce Studio, where almost every employee has gone to film school or is involved in the film community in some way. They’re all really excited to bring this app to the world, though they need funds.

Go support this awesome project by contributing a few dollars, you can do so on their Indiegogo page. I would love an app that makes it easier to watch movies with others, wouldn’t you too?

Three hurrays for no longer watching movies alone!

What do you think of the Movie On Me app? I think Brandon would really appreciate feedback, so let us know below!
