PASSENGERS Trailer

At long last, we have footage for Passengers.

Most people have been waiting for this since mid-2015 when news hit that Sony was green lighting a sci-fi romance led by two of the hottest actors in the game. Christ Pratt was flying high off of The Lego Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Jurassic World at the time, while Jennifer Lawrence was still in the midst of both The Hunger Games and X-Men series.

Yet headlines were dominated by contract negotiations that put Lawrence’s paycheck well above Pratt’s, a sign of lingering intrigue over the Sony email scandal and its revelations about the pay disparity between male and female staff, including the cast of American Hustle (which featured Lawrence).

In reality, Passengers has been gestating much longer than that. The script appeared on The Black List (a list of the most liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) back in 2007, with its ensuing false starts varying in budget, studio, and stars. The version we’re getting is a $100+ million behemoth, and with that much money involved, don’t expect the film to take too many chances.

Still, while it might not be the hard sci-fi adventure some were hoping for, a romp with two of the most charming actors working today is nothing to turn your nose up at. We all enjoyed Pratt’s Jurassic World, and that wasn’t exactly a work of art. Think of this as trading the dinosaurs for some spacewalking and a heavy dose of Lawrence. That sounds like an enjoyable diversion at the movies.

Passengers is directed by Morten Tyldum and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, and Michael Sheen. It will be released in the U.S. on December 21st, 2016 and in the U.K. on December 23rd, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
