POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING Trailer

The comedy trio The Lonely Island made their name in the shorts scene, contributing 5-minute pieces to the monthly festival Channel 101 before becoming synonymous with the Saturday Night Live segment Digital Short. Since then, they’ve only become more popular, making the feature film Hot Rod and performing their hit song Everything is Awesome at the Oscars, while member Andy Samberg has become a household name. You may not recognize the other two members, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, but I guarantee that you’ve seen bits that they either wrote, directed, or featured in.

For their second film, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, they once again jab at the music industry with a mockumentary-style riff on a pop/rap superstar struggling to hold on to fame. With the trio now firmly embedded in the American comedy scene, this film is chock full of big-name players both in front of and behind the camera, which should help land the absurd, slightly surreal style they often go for. I mean, is Pink just riding the unicorn or is she the Unicorn Handler?

Weird questions abound from the trailer alone, which is a good sign that the film will at least have sections that work well. Whether they can form the madness into a fully fleshed out film remains to be seen, but considering the group has stuck to material that they’ve proven adept at satirizing, I wouldn’t bet against them.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is directed by Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. It stars Andy Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone. It will be released in the U.S. on June 3rd, 2016 and in the U.K. on August 26th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
