Royal Blunder: “Only More is Enough” — A Delightful Debut

Whoever said rock ‘n’ roll was dead failed to let Royal Blunder know. Born from the ashes of other projects, this Seattle four-piece is releasing their debut EP, “Only More is Enough.”
With four tracks and clocking in at under thirteen minutes, this is the kind of garage-rock power-pop that will have you drumming the steering wheel during your morning commute or tapping your toe as you do the dishes. From the opening track “The Clock,” you catch on to their vibe immediately, and their boppy beats and infectious energy lead you straight into the EP’s title track.

According to guitarist/vocalist Robert Cochran, “Only More is Enough” is about the addictive nature of the love he has for his wife, and its guitar riff, bass groove, and vocal melody are just as gripping. “Sherlock Holmes,” the third track, is the slowest of the four, but even then its swingy ¾ count doesn’t let up. Finally, just as you had a second to breathe, we’re right back to it with the driving beats and choppy riffs of the final track, “Blink.”
Citing influence from the likes of Elvis Costello and The Kinks, Royal Blunder’s music takes on a near-timeless aesthetic, allowing them to feel like the opening act for these spiritual predecessors. These veteran musicians have a sound and vibe that allow them to fit in on many diverse shows, from punk to alt-country and everything in between. With that kind of flexibility, keep an eye out if they venture out of the Seattle area to a venue near you. Until then, give this EP a spin.
