THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER Trailer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is an upcoming film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. Lanthimos has been quite productive as of late with The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and next year’s The Favourite all coming out within a five year period. Lanthimos is an acquired taste, some love his work (guilty) while others find it hard to sit through. This is mostly due to his dark sense of humour which is often delivered in a very deadpan manner. Another reason some people don’t like his work is his taste for sudden bursts of violence.

The trailer is mostly composed of random images, mysterious narration, and the voice of a young girl singing an acapella version of Ellie Goulding’s Burn. What does it all mean? Who knows? Given the fact this is the first trailer, it’s all about establishing the atmosphere and this trailer certainly does that! As you’re watching the trailer, you’re not quite sure what’s going on but you feel uncomfortable already. The Killing of a Sacred Deer has some sort of revenge driven plot which should make for some truly horrific sequences going off of Lanthimos’ previous work.

The one thing I missed in this trailer was the presence of Angeliki Papoulia, who starred in KynodontasAlpeis, and briefly appeared in The Lobster. To me she is the perfect embodiment of Lanthimos‘ cinema, she looks a little awkward, scared almost, but she also has the ability to scare you with a look of fierce determination on her face. It’s that level of unpredictability that I appreciate about Lanthimos‘ work, and it’s that quality that has me counting down the days until his ‘Sacred Deer‘ wanders into a cinema near me.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Alicia Silverstone and Bill Camp. It will be released in the U.S. on October 27th, 2017 and in the U.K. on November 17th, 2017. For international release dates click here.
