STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI Trailer

After months of speculation and the release of the first Star Wars Story, Rogue One, the first trailer for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was finally released on October 9th. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is the latest adventure in the Star Wars saga which has been going strong for 40 years. Some time has passed since Episode VII and many have pointed out that while they were happy to see the franchise continue, the film did feel like a piece of retread that did not break any new ground. With that in mind many expect this film to be the Empire Strikes Back of the new series. On top of that, Episode VIII will be emotional for many since this is the last outing for the recently departed Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher.

Okay, there’s a lot to unpack here; a showdown between Finn (John Boyega) and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), which would be nice considering how underused Phasma was in Episode VII. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) possibly killing Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) although this seems unlikely given Episode VII. In addition, it eludes to a possible alliance between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren. However the most exciting thing about this trailer is that we finally get to see Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in action. Oh, and there’s a new cute cuddly animal to get excited about called Porgs.

The brief snippets of scenes and dialogue suggest that this will be a darker, more mature Star Wars film. While there’s nothing wrong with the fun nostalgia of Episode VII, this is much more exciting to look at. One of the lines in this trailer “this is not going to go the way you think” suggests fans may not get the darker Star Wars they want although I suspect this might be a lighthearted way to misdirect people’s attention.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and many others. It will be released in the U.S. on December 15th, 2017 and the U.K. on December 14th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
