SUSPIRIA Trailer

Dancing and dying returns with Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria, his much talked about take on the Dario Argento classic.

Guadagnino claims that his version won’t be a direct remake, so there’s a chance it will surprise even the original’s diehard fans. The trailer certainly looks different enough, with no hint of the gauzy colors that made the 1977 horror film so distinctive. Guadagnino seems to be going darker, and while the blood isn’t flowing yet in these clips, the threat of violence hangs over everything.

A period horror film might not be the expected next step for Guadagnino after his acclaimed romance Call Me by Your Name, but the project does have some common threads with his previous work. A Bigger Splash was all about the lead-up to a murder, and while the dead bodies will likely come much faster this time around, at least we know he can handle the dirty business. And if he does want to keep some of Argento’s over-the-top feel, he showed that he can handle an extreme tone in I Am Love.

The most obvious carryovers, though, is the return of Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton, both of whom have collaborated with Guadagnino in the past. Some were alarmed by the casting of Johnson after her less than stellar run in the Fifty Shades trilogy, but considering Luca brought out her best work in A Bigger Splash, it may not be the misstep people are anticipating.

Taking on a classic means all eyes are on this project, and so far everything that’s been released has being minutely analyzed. This trailer played it smart by giving little away.

Suspiria is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Mia Goth. It will be released in the US on November 2nd, 2018. For further release dates, click here.
