THE BATMAN Trailer

The Caped Crusader gets another gritty reboot in The Batman, the latest from co-writer/director Matt Reeves.

Continuing the trend of using DC characters in standalone movies separate from their extended universe, this movie sees Batman…doing something with Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, and all his usual allies. Beyond that, the plot is being kept under wraps, but we all know Batman’s deal at this point. I imagine he’ll brood and question whether he’s helping as Gotham descends into chaos. But more importantly, he’ll drive a cool, indestructible car.

I jest because the appeal of Batman is well known, but that’s led to a lot of movies about/featuring the character in the last twenty years. I find it hard to imagine a new take on the character coming from another grim, grimy outing, but we all like Batman so much that we’re willing to give it a chance, right?

At least Reeves has proven himself recently by helming the last two Planet of the Apes movies, which themselves were grim takes on a well-known property. They’ll be less CGI this time, but he has retained Andy Serkis, who appears here sans motion capture as Batman’s butler, Alfred.

Batman himself is being played by Robert Pattinson, whose bizarre GQ interview is the best indication that something new might be afoot here. Co-starring with him is Zoë Kravitz, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, and Colin Farrell.

So yeah, there’s more Batman on the way. But will it be a new Batman, like they claim?

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, and Andy Serkis. It will be released in the US and the UK on March 4th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
