The Dark Tower is the latest Stephen King adaptation to hit the big screen. The Dark Tower series was published over a thirty year period between 1982 and 2012 and is considered among Stephen King‘s best work as it does a good job of combining some of the concepts that were introduced in some of King‘s previous work.

It’s a minor miracle the film is finally coming out given the fact that it was stuck in development hell for over 10 years going through numerous big name directors such as J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard (who ended up producing the film instead) in the process. The film also saw a number of great actors including Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, Naomie Harris and Viggo Mortensen come and go over the years, eventually settling on Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger) and Walter Padick (The Man in Black) respectively.

The Dark Tower will be supernatural action western as demonstrated by its use of Ennio Morricone‘s Carillon which was featured in For A Few Dollars More. King has previously admitted that the Dollars trilogy was a big influence on The Dark Tower series with The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) being a big influence on the character Roland Deschain (Idris Elba).

The Dark Tower trailer does a good job introducing the characters, the concepts and the style, especially some of the one-liners in the trailer make it seem like this will be a very quotable film including lines such as, “I do not kill with my gun, I kill with my heart,” and, “I do not shoot with my hand, I shoot with my mind”.

The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Dennis Haysbert, Abbey Lee, Tom Taylor and José Zúñiga. It will be released in the U.S. on August 4th, 2017 and in the U.K. on August 18th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
