THE FAVOURITE Trailer

Yorgos Lanthimos is back with The Favourite, which means more pitch black humor and aggressive weirdness is coming your way.

Ostensibly, the film is about the goings-on in the court of Queen Anne, but there’s no way this is a staid period piece. Could you imagine Lanthimos giving us a prim and proper look at British history? Neither can I, which is why it’s unsurprising to see that chaos reigns in this first trailer. Garish makeup, animal races, and guns are everywhere, but it thankfully only offers us glimpses of the madness. I trust that Lanthimos will throw in some surprises, and spoiling those would be no fun.

What’s clear is that The Favourite revolves around three women, all of whom are played by top actresses. Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman return to Lanthimos after being featured in The Lobster while Emma Stone is the flashy new addition. The rest of the cast is filled out by recognizable names and faces, as happens when you’ve got an esteemed name in the director’s chair.

The only odd thing when glimpsing behind the scenes is to see that Lanthimos had no hand in the script. He usually co-writes his projects, but here he’s taken on material penned by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. A twist, to be sure, but it likely won’t take away from Lanthimos’ signature style. At this point you should know what to expect from the guy, and you probably know whether that works for you or not. Personally, I’m chomping at the bit for this thing.

The Favourite is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Olivia ColmanEmma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. It will be released in the US on November 23rd, 2018 and in the UK on January 1st, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
