THE MEG Trailer

You never know what will come out of the deep, but the likelihood of a megalodon reappearing is slim to none. The massive prehistoric shark has long been an object of speculation for monster enthusiasts, so it’s unsurprising to see it featured in the Statham versus shark showdown The Meg.

What is surprising is the film’s budget, getting an estimated $150 million for a premise that seems destined for B-movie glory: The 70-foot shark has survived the millennia in the Mariana Trench (the deepest known area of the ocean and a classic hiding spot for alleged monsters), and now our undersea exploring has coaxed it from the depths.

This is unabashed silliness, and Jason Statham is just the man to take down the marauding beast. He’ll battle the shark until our minds are mush and we’re cheering for him to somehow throw a punch underwater. Or, you know, whatever crazy climax this movie throws at us.

Directing this bonkers blockbuster is Jon Turteltaub, who has already given us big crowd-pleasers like National Treasure and Cool Runnings. As long as he keeps this thing knowingly dumb, which is about the only way to handle a monster movie this unwieldy, it could make for a tasty summer morsel.

The Meg is directed by Jon Turteltaub and stars Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, and Rainn Wilson. It will be released in the US and the UK on August 10th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.

Are you ready for a massively dumb shark movie?
