WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT Trailer

Tina Fey will inevitably put butts in the seats, but surprisingly this is her first solo vehicle as an actress. She’s previously been paired with the likes of Amy Poehler, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd, making Paramount Pictures’ decision to promote her as the sole lead almost bold. It’s sad to think that someone as famous and successful as Fey still has something to prove in Hollywood, but Whiskey Tango Foxtrot will certainly be seen as a test of just how marketable she is.

And there seems to have been other options, as the cast is not only stacked, but both Billy Bob Thornton and Margot Robbie appear to have large roles. Then again, they aren’t the first people you think of when it comes to comedy, and the trailer is clearly playing up the film’s broader side.

There’s hints at a dark undercurrent, but it’s overridden by banter and peppy music. Personally, I found the inclusion of Elle King’s Ex’s and Oh’s ill-fitting, but I had a hard time getting a read on just what this film will turn out to be. I wouldn’t be surprised if it took a more serious turn towards its ending, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it remained a broad comedy throughout.

Screenwriter Robert Carlock has worked with Fey on 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, so I’m hopeful that the familiarity will translate into gags that work to Fey’s strengths. She’s got a lot of experience making the news funny from her SNL days, so this could turn into a win, and more solo vehicles, for the supremely talented lady.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Tina Fey, Billy Bob Thornton, Margot Robbie, and Martin Freeman star. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on March 4th, 2016. For other release dates, click here.
