A CURE FOR WELLNESS Trailer

Coming straight from your institutional nightmares is A Cure for Wellness, complete with drab hallways, iron lungs, and suspicious medication. Refreshingly, none of it adds up to a clear plot, as the trailer is more intent on establishing setting and mood than anything else. A slowed down version of “I Wanna Be Sedated” holds the nightmarish clips together, giving the impression that the film might be paced slower than you would initially think.

That would be consistent with director Gore Verbinski’s most similar film, 2002’s The Ring. Granted, that remake was bound to the plot of the original, but considering how much mileage Verbinski got out of atmosphere in that film, it would be odd for him take a drastically different approach this time.

Screenwriter Justin Haythe’s filmography doesn’t give any additional hints about how the film’s construction, as he has written both the plodding adaptation of Revolutionary Road and the action/thriller Snitch (among others). If he has a wheelhouse, then I can’t find it, which appropriately enhances the mystery surrounding A Cure for Wellness.

What’s clear is that Dane DeHaan’s character will get more than he bargained for at the medical castle, and whether that causes a slick descent or a more methodical breakdown, the path does look intriguingly striking.

A Cure for Wellness is directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth, and Jason Isaacs. It will be released in the U.S. on February 17th, 2017 and in the U.K. on March 24th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
