When people talk about the best football player of all time it’s usually a toss-up between either Pelé and Maradona or Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. Maradona has had the most tumultuous life off the field out of these four players, which is probably the reason why documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia decided to create this documentary. The documentary consists of footage taken from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage.
Diego Maradona marks the second time Kapadia has been involved with a documentary about a football legend, he previously produced the 2015 documentary Ronaldo about Cristiano Ronaldo.
Kapadia became known for his celebrated documentaries about the lives of singer Amy Winehouse and Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. Considering the man at the centre of this project, this should make for a very interesting documentary about the price of fame, pressure, drugs and consorting with mafia figures.
Diego Maradona is directed by Asif Kapadia. It will be released on June 14th, 2019 in the U.K. and on September 14th, 2019 in the U.S. The documentary will be shown at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. For international release dates click here.
