FLATLINERS Trailer

No entity remains dead nowadays, not flatlined medical students or ’90s cult films.

The neon-bathed sci-fi/horror movie Flatliners is getting a sequel almost thirty years later, but you’ll be forgiven for thinking this is a remake. The new movie keeps the exact same title (not even a ‘2’ has been added) and the trailer sets up the same plot: medical students experimenting on near-death experiences unleash dangerous side effects.

Still, this new Flatliners isn’t revisiting worn out fears. What happens after we die remains a mystery, and the whole premise is a great setup for some horror-filled fun. A solid cast led by Ellen Page and Diego Luna should be able to play up the various genres here, although it’s hard to live up to the original star-studded group.

Director Niels Arden Oplev doesn’t come in with the same name recognition Joel Schumacher had, either, but don’t lower your standards for him. He made the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and has been working steadily in television since, including the excellent pilot for Mr. Robot.

It seems like the sequel is taking another highly stylized approach to the material, but the original’s gothic overtones have been replaced with a more modern, sci-fi cool. Whether all of this is enough to revive the premise or whether it will be dead on arrival remains to be seen.

Flatliners is directed by Niels Arden Oplev and stars Ellen PageNina Dobrev, and James Norton. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on September 29th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
