THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER Trailer

Maggie Gyllenhaal gets a little too committed to her pupil in The Kindergarten Teacher.

A remake of the 2014 Israeli film of the same name, The Kindergarten Teacher keeps the slightly creepy premise of a teacher pushing for the development of a gifted student but adds in some culture-specific critiques. As you can see in the trailer, Gyllenhaal isn’t exactly fulfilled by wrangling young kids, and she feels that the education system she labors in doesn’t do what’s best for her charges. So when a boy with a flair for poetry shows up, she latches onto his potential and goes much farther than her title allows to encourage his development.

Really, though, this whole thing can function as a showcase for Gyllenhaal, who like her brother can straddle the line between lovably desperate and downright creepy. She hasn’t gotten a ton of starring opportunities like this, so the longtime respect she’s earned could finally translate into an awards season run.

The only hindrance to this is the film’s slated US/Canada release on Netflix, who has only recently made an Oscar splash despite several attempts. They are showing it at TIFF (presumably with the promo package that comes with that), so they’re making an effort to win over the right people before its streaming release.

If they can convert its strong Sundance showing (where it won the Directing Award for Sara Colangelo), then maybe you’ll hear more about The Kindergarten Teacher, and more specifically Gyllenhaal’s performance, in the months to come.

The Kindergarten Teacher is directed by Sara Colangelo and stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Parker Sevak, and Gael García Bernal. It will be released in the US on October 12th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
