If you’ve ever wondered where the term Stockholm syndrome comes from, Stockholm is a good film to start with. Stockholm tells the strange but true story of two bank robbers (Ethan Hawke and Mark Strong) who decide to rob a bank in Stockholm. When the robbery turns into a hostage crisis, some of the employees such as Bianca (Noomi Rapace) start to develop positive feelings towards the bank robbers.

Although the film is based on the 1973 Normalmstorg robbery, the real life bank robbers were not American but Swedish. One of the real bank robbers stayed in touch with some of the hostages for years after the fact. The one thing that puzzled me about this trailer is the fact the names of the people involved have been changed. They still sound Swedish but these are not the names of the people involved in the 1973 hostage crisis. Perhaps due to legal reasons? Either way, Stockholm looks like an interesting crime comedy about one of the strangest psychological phenomena there is.

Stockholm is directed by Robert Budreau and stars Ethan Hawke, Noomi Rapace, Mark Strong and Christopher Heyerdahl. It will be released in the U.S. on April 12th, 2019 with an as of yet unknown U.K. release date. For international release dates click here.
