THE GREEN KNIGHT Trailer

An Arthurian legend is resurrected in The Green Knight, the latest from writer/director David Lowery.

The title for this adaptation is actually a bit of a misnomer, as the film really follows Sir Gawain, whose encounter with the Green Knight leads to many tests of his strength and character. With no previous accomplishments to his name, Gawain accepts the strange quest hoping to prove himself, and in true Arthurian form, the thing snowballs into something far beyond his imagination.

In case it’s not obvious, this is a loose retelling, so don’t worry if you’ve heard the story a million times. After all, Gawain would not traditionally be played by Dev Patel, but who really cares. It doesn’t hurt to spruce up old stories, and Patel has risen to every role set before him. An Arthurian knight is just another badass notch in his belt.

Lowery’s attachment is another big indication that this will get a twist, as the writer/director always puts his own stamp on his movies. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and A Ghost Story showed an unusually patient and sumptuous style, and even his Disney remake, Pete’s Dragon, was its own thing (and it was all the better for it).

With an equally strong supporting cast in  Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, and Ralph InesonThe Green Knight looks like it might live up to its legendary inspiration.

The Green Knight is directed by David Lowery and stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, and Joel Edgerton. It will be released in the US on May 29th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
