A GHOST STORY Trailer

Ghost stories aren’t all scary. Sometimes they are tragic, funny, poignant, or intriguing, reflecting not an accurate historical account but what people wish to remember. If you really want to understand a place, then you should always turn to folklore like ghost stories. It’s how regular people are preserved.

That seems to be angle writer/director David Lowery has taken in A Ghost Story, his low-budget follow-up to Pete’s Dragon. In fact, he felt the pull of smaller projects so strongly that he rushed off to make this film immediately after finishing Pete’s Dragon, and while his stature has grown so that even small projects re-team him with stars like Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara (they all worked together on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), this is still a decidedly low-fi affair.

The ghost here is just a man under a sheet, and the action predominantly takes place in an ordinary house. Of course, that house isn’t ordinary to the people who build their lives there, and that’s how the trailer slips into its grand themes. Both Affleck and Mara’s characters ruminate on the memories a house can contain before a death is revealed, and so the haunting begins. Not one that elicits sharp fear, but one that lingers and gives pause, the way death is wont to do.

A Ghost Story is directed by David Lowery and stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. It will be released in the U.S. on July 7th, 2017. Further release dates are not currently known.
