Alone in Berlin is a movie based on the lives of Otto and Elise Hampel, portrayed by Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson. Alone in Berlin is the latest adaptation of the story of Otto and Elise, with previous adaptations being released in 1962, 1970, 1976, though in this edition, the Hampels had a name change and are now named Quangel.

The reason their last name has been changed to Quangel in Alone in Berlin is because all of the adaptations of their story so far have been based on the 1947 Hans Fallada book “Every Man Dies Alone”, in which their names had been changed to Otto and Anna Quangel.

Otto and Elise were a German working class couple who decided to rebel against Hitler by spreading postcards with anti-Nazi information amongst the population after their son died while fighting in France in 1940. It’s a historical inaccuracy that has made its way into these adaptations that the Hampels rebelled because of the death of their son – rather, in reality, it was because of the death of Elise’s brother.

Over a period of two years they spread more than 200 hand-written postcards in a number of locations in Berlin. The Nazi side of the story is given shape through the presence of police inspector Escherich (portrayed by Daniel Brühl), who is tasked with tracking down the people responsible for the postcards.

Alone in Berlin is directed by Vincent Perez and stars Daniel Brühl, Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson and Mikael Persbrandt. The movie will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on January 13th, 2017. The movie has already been released in some countries, click here to find out when it opens near you.
