BLACK BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER: A Messy, But Emotional Tribute to The King

The MCU keeps rolling with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the latest from co-writer/director Ryan Coogler.

As one of the most critically and commercially successful entries in the franchise, 2018’s Black Panther positioned both the titular character and his solo movies as a backbone for the MCU going forward. Until, of course, the death of actor Chadwick Boseman rocked all those plans. Let’s not be crass: the loss of Boseman was felt most acutely by the people who knew and loved him, but in shouldering the weight of being the most esteemed Black actor of his generation Boseman’s death became a loss felt far and wide.

The loss inevitably hangs over Wakanda Forever, which had to be reimagined as a story of the characters around T’Challa reeling from his death instead of supporting him through his continued journey. It’s an unfair and tough assignment for everyone involved but the MCU rolls on, and to drop the entire Black Panther world would’ve been an even greater loss.

Returning to lead everyone through is Coogler, who proved that he could deliver what this story deserves in 2018’s Black Panther. In front of the camera Letitia Wright as T’Challa’s sister Shuri moves into the lead, with Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, and Martin Freeman also returning.

This trailer is more focused on getting across a mournful but resolute tone than giving away plot details about how the adventure will continue, and as a first look, that feels right.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, and Martin Freeman. It will be released in the US and the UK on November 11th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
