DON’T LOOK UP Trailer

No one pays attention to the scientists in Don’t Look Up, the latest comedy from writer/director Adam McKay.

Astronomers Randall and Kate weren’t looking for attention. They were looking at the stars when they found a comet hurtling towards Earth, one that’s big enough to wipe out all of humanity. They try to raise the alarm in official ways, but when the government blows them off, they release the info to the public. Instead of inciting panic, though, the news is ignored by pretty much everyone, leaving them the only ones freaking out.

If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that people won’t trust sound science if it’s not telling them what they want to hear. McKay is taking that to a ridiculous extreme here, as he did in his last two films, Vice and The Big Short, and given how much this dynamic has wrecked our lives, it might just be cathartic to laugh about it.

Given McKay’s recent successes, this is an unsurprisingly star-studded affair. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star as the main astronomers bouncing off believers and non-believers played by Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Melanie Lynskey, Cate Blanchett, and Tyler Perry, among many, many others.

It’s a solid premise and a solid team for McKay’s latest, but can it reach the same heights he’s achieved before? We’ll all find out when it hits Netflix for a festive Christmas Eve release.

Don’t Look Up is directed by Adam McKay and stars Leonardo DiCaprioJennifer Lawrence, and Rob Morgan. It will begin a limited theatrical release in the US on December 10th, 2021 before releasing worldwide on Netflix on December 24th.
