A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING Trailer

A startlingly quiet release for star Tom Hanks, the trailer for A Hologram for the King is a hard nut to crack. Is it about a white guy finding himself in the desert of Saudi Arabia? A humorous take on culture clashes? A rom-com? Maybe it’s all of the above, as the film is based on the book of the same name by acclaimed author Dave Eggers.

Eggers is perhaps best known for his debut, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which is a heady but entertaining read that plays on a few different levels. Given that and Egger’s other work (including co-writing the screenplay for Where the Wild Things Are), I would be far more surprised if Hologram turns out to be a simple story rather than a complex one. That doesn’t mean the film will work, as disparate themes are often hard to reduce and synthesis into a film, but it should at least be an interesting mess.

Hanks will surely be as watchable as ever, and writer/director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) has pulled off enough films to give me hope. Plus, I assume there will be holograms, so that’s cool.

A Hologram for the King is directed by Tom Tykwer and stars Tom Hanks, Alexander Black, and Sarita Choudhury. It will be released in the U.S. on April 22nd, 2016 and in the U.K. on May 20th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
