MISS STEVENS Trailer

Julia Hart’s career takes another unexpected turn with Miss Stevens, a dramedy about a struggling teacher escorting three high schoolers to a drama competition. Hart was a teacher herself before writing the period home invasion thriller The Keeping Room, and with her second screenplay she takes on directing as well.

While Miss Stevens may seem frothily familiar, I would warn against putting this film in a box. The Keeping Room looked like a standard thriller on the surface, but powering everything was anxieties about social change and women’s often marginalized roles during such times. I doubt this one will start with a quote from William Tecumseh Sherman, but Hart also isn’t taking on something as brutal as total war.

The lighter material should make Hart’s second film more accessible, but it looks like she’s still plumbing the depths of being a real woman. The trailer is vague about what problems are weighing the teacher down, but it’s clear that she’s got issues coming from multiple directions. Lily Rabe took home the Best Actress award at SXSW for her performance in the film, so expect Stevens to be a refreshingly complicated woman.

Miss Stevens is directed by Julia Hart and stars Lily Rabe, Timothée Chalamet, and Rob Huebel. It will be released in the U.S. on September 16th, 2016. Further release dates are not currently known.
