QUEENPINS Trailer

Couponing gets truly extreme in Queenpins, the latest from the writer/director duo of Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly.

Like many people, Connie and JoJo were struggling to make ends meet. They weren’t reckless with money and they knew the basic saving strategies, but it had become apparent that playing by the rules would only get them so far. Their experience with couponing means they knew the weak points of that particular business, and when they decide to team up and exploit these openings, they finally start getting ahead. Problem is, they get too far ahead for their own good and attract the attention of a dedicated loss prevention officer.

This strange path to riches is actually based on a true story, and the absurdity isn’t lost on anyone making it. The trailer shows that plenty of laughs will be mixed in, giving this movie a feel similar to Hustlers. That’s a big shadow to fall under, and it will be hard for Gaudet and Pullapilly, with only one narrative feature under their belts, to live up to it.

The good news for them is they have a stellar duo leading the way in front of the camera. I doubt I need to sing the praises of Kristen Bell, so lets take a moment for her partner in crime, Kirby Howell-Baptiste. She’s a scene-stealer in projects as wide-ranging as Killing Eve and Cruella and has stolen attention from Bell before in The Good Place and Veronica Mars. By right she should be a massive star on her own, and hopefully being the co-lead here will get her the attention she deserves.

Co-starring as the guys on their tail is Paul Walter Hauser and Vince Vaughn, who nicely round out what looks to be a lively tale of criminal mischief.

Queenpins is directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly and stars Kristen Bell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Paul Walter Hauser. It will be released in the US on September 10th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
