ROUGH NIGHT Trailer

Hollywood has been testing the waters with raunchy, female-driven comedies for years now, but none have boasted the box office firepower of Rough Night. Statistically speaking, you can’t beat Scarlett Johansson. She was named the highest-grossing actress of all time by Box Office Mojo, and her presence here lifts Rough Night to a level of exposure few comedies enjoy.

This is odd, because Johansson isn’t known for her comedic roles. Yes, there was Ghost World and the occasional romantic comedy, but action has been her bread and butter for years now. Seeing her traipse around in an inappropriate headband with Kate McKinnon and Ilana Glazer is not what most people expect from her, but it’s certainly welcome.

The female comedy genre could use a lift after some bumpy outings, and Rough Night could easily provide a needed win. Directed and co-written by Lucia Aniello, the project has deep ties to the television series Broad City, which Glazer also stars in. Like that show, this is comedy about women for everyone, as the gender of the characters could easily be flipped without changing the premise at all. In fact, the premise seems very similar to 1998’s Very Bad Things.

That the film does feature women, and a group of very talented women at that, is about the only thing setting it apart from other ill-fated party movies. If it manages to succeed, then it will be a proud notch in all the main player’s belts. If not, then we’ll probably get a bunch of think pieces on why women aren’t funny.

Rough Night is directed by Lucia Aniella and stars Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Kravitz, and Jillian Bell. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on June 16th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
