STAYING VERTICAL Trailer

Writer/director Alain Guiraudie broke out with 2013’s Stranger by the Lake; the graphic, lust-driven movie that took home a couple awards at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. As per usual with that group, initial success means the filmmaker was brought back, so Guiraudie’s follow up, Staying Vertical, had its premiere at Cannes last year. While not winning, its content earned many raised eyebrows, with Vanity Fair declaring it the festival’s most shocking movie.

The trailer certainly isn’t shy about sex, but as a warning, these glimpses apparently only skim the surface of the film’s content. Explicit images and the plot’s overall wanderlust is downplayed, both of which led to a mixed critical reaction during its festival run.

If you want to keep up with boundary-pushing cinema, though, Staying Vertical and Guiraudie’s other work are must-sees, serving up an LGBT perspective on things like fatherhood and death. While these have often prompted groan-inducing puns from reviewers, it appears that Guiraudie isn’t immune to wordplay either. Staying Vertical can be read as a dirty euphemism, but I’m guessing it’s more about the character’s struggle to stay alive, particularly with metaphor heavy wolves looming.

Staying Vertical is directed by Alain Guiraudie and stars Damien Bonnard, India Hair, and Raphaël Thiéry. It will be released in the U.S. on January 20th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
