THE MEDDLER Trailer

The overbearing mother is like a cartoon to me, something I’ve seen portrayals of but never experienced in real life. My own mother barely comments on my steadfast single life and accepts both what I wish to tell her and what I choose to play close to the vest. It’s always been that way and hence is comfortingly familiar, which I assume is exactly how those on the opposite end of the mother-daughter spectrum describe their relationship like, too.

That comfort is what breeds comedies like The Meddler, because even though they drive us crazy, most of us love and care for our parents. Not all of us need a scathing therapy session process our relationship; sometimes a laugh is enough. That’s what writer/director Lorene Scafaria has clearly done with this film, which makes a genial if exacerbated pair of Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne.

Scafaria previously made Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and wrote Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, precedents that don’t make me think The Meddler will go too deep into this relationship. The trailer certainly feels light, although there is a romantic subplot for Sarandon that refreshingly doesn’t seem to involve the daughter at all. Both Sarandon and Byrne could handle a multifaceted story, but a loving take on a mother and daughter would be satisfying, too.

The Meddler is directed by Lorene Scafaria and stars Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne, and J.K. Simmons.  It will be released in the U.S. on April 22nd, 2016. International release dates can be found here.
