WILDLIFE Trailer

Even though it’s common, it’s still not easy when a family crumbles, and that’s precisely the source of drama in Paul Dano’s directorial debut, Wildlife.

Based on the novel of the same name by Richard Ford, the film sees a family move to Montana during the 1960s. The change of scenery exposes their weaknesses, and the son is forced to watch his parents drift apart. It’s presented as a quiet movie, a study of deeply flawed characters, and one that just might break your heart.

The trailer promises an austere film, a rarity for a first-time filmmaker, particularly one with a background in acting like Dano. Still, it fits with the feel of most Ford novels, which move with great care around their mundane tragedies. In taking cues from such a renowned novelist, Dano just might be able to make his mark early in this new career branch.

Of course, Wildlife also benefits from a stacked cast, which itself is a trademark of actor-turned-director projects. Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal headline the film as the embroiled parents, but the weight of playing the observer (and hence, likely an audience surrogate) falls on Ed Oxenbould. He’s got a lot of credits for a young actor, but this will be one of the first times he treads into complicated, adult themes.

Adapting celebrated material tends to raise expectations quite high, but luckily this film’s festival run has earned uniform praise. Perhaps Dano and his team have actually done the book justice.

Wildlife is directed by Paul Dano and stars Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ed Oxenbould. It will be released in the US on October 19th, 2018 and in the UK on November 9th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
